MSM turnover exceeds RO 577m by Aug

MUSCAT: The total turnover of Muscat Securities Market reached RO 577.426 million by the end of August 2018, constituting a decrease by 4.7 per cent over RO 606.175 million by the end of August 2017, whereas the general index declined by 12.5 per cent, according to the data released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).


The total value of trading during the month of August decreased to RO 25.557 million from RO 56.921 million as of July, while in June it was RO 36.75 million.


The general index of the market was 4.419.3 points at the end of August 2018, compared to 5.052.6 points at the end of the same period in 2017.


The manufacturing sector led the decline by 19.3 per cent to 5.453 points by the end of August against 6.761 points at the end of the same period last year.


The financial sector recorded a decrease of 7.5 per cent to reach 6.892 points in August 2018, compared to 7.453 points at the end of August 2017. Services sector decreased by 3.8 per cent to reach 2.376 points by the end of August against 2.470 points by the end of the same month in 2017.


The total number of shares traded by the end of August 2018 surged by 9.5 per cent to reach RO 3.03 billion, compared to 2.771 billion by the end of August 2017.


By the end of August, Omani investors acquired 88 per cent of the purchase price, compared to 2 per cent of foreign investors, 6 per cent of GCC nationals and 4 per cent of other Arabs.


The purchase of Omani investors increased to RO 148.274 million, which is a net gain.


The sell-off from GCC investors recorded a negative figure of RO 31.490 million and foreign investors registered a net negative figure of RO 77.6 million.


Similarly, the Arab investors also recorded net transactions of a negative figure of RO 39.1 million.


The financial sector accounted for 54 per cent of the shares trade, the service sector was at 28 per cent and the industrial sector accounted for 18 per cent. — ONA
