MUSCAT: Muscat Securities Market (MSM) will organise today a lecture on the major challenges facing the global economy in 2017. The lecture, which will be presented by Dr Salah Abdul Rahman Altalib, economic expert at MSM. The lecture will discuss a number of themes on the forecasts of the global economy in light of the performance indicators in 2016 and how far it will affect economies of the region. The seminar is part of MSM plans to raise economic awareness and follow up of the latest developments in international arena. It also aims at providing individuals and institutions with the opportunity to benefit from the available data and information.

It should be noted that the global economy has been affected in 2016 by a number of factors the most notable of which were the low economic growth rates, declining growth of world trade, fluctuation of oil prices in the world markets, appreciation of US dollar against most major currencies, the US Federal Reserve tendency to increase interest rates, the economic disorders faced by the advanced economies which constitute about 70 per cent of the global economy, Brexit and the protectionism policies by the new US administration. All these events will affect the performance of the world economy in 2017.  — ONA
