Also simple known as the Paris Mosque, Grande Mosquée de Paris is Hispano-Moresque building located in the 5th arrondissement and is one of the largest mosques in France. It is a stone’s throw away from Paris’s natural history museum and is dominated by a 33-metre-high minaret. The mosque was founded in 1926 as a token of gratitude, after World War I, to the Muslim tirailleurs from France’s colonial empire, of whom some 100,000 died fighting against Germany. It was inaugurated by President Gaston Doumergue on July 15, 1926.
