MUSCAT: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs on Tuesday marked three environmental events — the International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) (May 9), the International Day for Biodiversity, (May 22) and the World Turtle Day, (May 23) — under the auspices of Najeeb bin Ali al Rowas, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs. Suleiman bin Nasser al Akhzami, Director-General of Nature Conservation, in his speech said that this year IMBD was observed under the theme ‘Unifying our Voices for Bird Conservation’.

It was aimed at raising awareness about threats facing birds, as an important component of biodiversity, in addition to celebrating World Biodiversity Day, marking the 25th anniversary of the convention. Aziza bint Saud al Athubiya, Chairperson of Al Qurm Nature Reserve, delivered a lecture on Birds Survey Project in the Wetlands Reserve in the Governorate of Al Wusta. She talked about the survey project, the number of migratory birds, their types and migration routes. Two documentaries were screened on the Green Turtle Project and on migratory birds. The event concluded by honouring lecturers and participants. — ONA
