By Majid al Mahrouqi — MUSCAT: Jan. 16 - The Ministry of Health (MoH) has started implementation of e-payment services (credit/debit cards) for the clients of MoH’s health establishments. However, the cash payment system will be continued until further notice. Currently, a number of e-payment devices are being installed at the ministry’s health institutions in different governorates. Welcoming the service, Ahmed al Abri, a citizen, said: “It eases procedures, but it may be difficult for the elderly who have no idea about e-payment.” Abdullah al Abri, however, felt “there is no need for e-payment because the cost is just 200 baisa”. “Besides, old people will not be able to pay by card.”

According to Mohammed al Humaimi, this step has both negatives and positives. “It reduces manipulation of money. On the other hand, the elderly, especially housewives, do not know how to use a debit card.” He suggested a trial period for the procedure. “If it works, we can continue or revert to the earlier procedure.” The service has been implemented in line with the Sultanate’s electronic transition plans (e-government) and computerisation of healthcare services.
