Muscat: The Ministry of Manpower is seeking opinion on whether some governorates should be exempted from the mid-day break due to differences in temperature.

The opinion poll that started on August 8 will continue until August 29 and as of now 58.33 per cent of the votes polled are in favor of the exemption.

The opinion poll by the Ministry of Manpower holds significance as places such as Dhofar do not witness high temperature as it is in the rest of the country.

As per Article 16 of the Occupational Health and Safety Measures under the Ministerial Decision 286/2008, workers will not work in construction sites or open areas of high temperature at noon, between 12:30pm and 3:30pm during the months of June, July and August every year.

Currently, the employer or his representative is liable to pay a fine of not less than RO 100 and not more than RO 500 and a jail term of one month or shall be subjected to one of these two penalties in case of infringing the provisions of the sixth section of this law and the regulations and resolutions issued to execute it.

The companies are required to report any incident at work to the concerned authorities within 24 hours.
