Mercedes has revealed that it will stop production of the gas-powered Smart Fortwo and the Smart Fortwo Cabrio cars. Instead, going forward, the company would only focus on the battery-powered variant. Mercedes-Benz head Dietmar Exler revealed that certain changes in the segment for micro cars had led to few challenges for its Smart portfolio. “Smart will discontinue sales of the gasoline powered Smart Fortwo and Fortwo Cabrio for the US and Canadian markets after model year 2017,” noted Exler. The halt in production of the fuel variant seems to be less due to environmental concern and more due to the current demands of the US and Canadian markets.
