Media coverage for Councils analysed at meet

MUSCAT: Objectivity is important when covering activities of the State Council and Majlis Ash’shura, a meeting of the two councils with the Omani editors said on Wednesday. The State Council and Majlis Ash’shura held the meeting with editors of local Arabic/ English newspapers and news sites to discuss measures to strengthen cooperation between the Councils and the media. Dr Khalid bin Salem al Saidi, Secretary-General of the State Council, and Shaikh Ali bin Nasser al Mahrouqi, Secretary-General of Majlis Ash’shura, were also present at the meeting.


Speaking on the occasion, Dr Al Saidi stressed on the keenness of the Council of Oman in reaching out to the media entities to assure professional media coverage of its activities. According to him, the meeting was held to exchange views with media organisations to come up with a comprehensive vision that conveys message of the Council and reflects positively in both print and audiovisual media. Lauding the vital role of media in highlighting the work of the Council and raising awareness among the general public, Dr Al Saidi hoped for further improvement in the media coverage for the Council and to enhance its work and activities.


The Secretary-General of Majlis Ash’shura underscored the role played by the media in creating awareness about the parliamentary system and the Council’s functioning. He pointed out the importance of coordination between the two sides to achieve desired goals.  The meeting also discussed ways to develop cooperation between the Council and the media and the reality of current media coverage of Council’s activities. It stressed the need to allocate journalists for covering the Council proceedings. The meeting also discussed providing of information and arranging interviews/ dialogues with Council officials and training services.
