London: Champions Manchester City moved top of the Premier League table on Saturday thanks to a 2-0 win over Brighton.

Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero scored the goals for City as they moved top on goal difference from Liverpool, who lost their 100 per cent record but remained unbeaten with a 1-1 draw at Chelsea.

Tottenham are fourth after a 2-0 win at bottom side Huddersfield, but Manchester United are only 10th after a 3-1 loss at West Ham, leaving them with 10 points from seven games, equalling their worst-ever start to a Premier League season.

It took City almost half an hour to break the defence of Brighton but after Sterling scored the opener, City dominated and Aguero sealed the win with the second goal in the second half. “After seven games, we are as consistent as we were last season,” City manager Pep Guardiola said.

“We were solid and conceded just one shot on target against Cardiff, Oxford and Brighton.”

Liverpool are level on points with City after snatching a point at Chelsea thanks to a brilliant Daniel Sturridge strike late on.

Eden Hazard put Chelsea in front in the first half with a fine left-foot finish and both sides had chances in a breathless encounter.

It looked as if Chelsea would earn a second win over Liverpool in four days, having knocked them out of the League Cup in midweek, but Sturridge curled a brilliant left-foot strike of his own into the top corner for the equaliser.

Chelsea stayed third, two points behind, while Tottenham are two points further back in fourth after a 2-0 win at bottom side Huddersfield.

Harry Kane scored twice, once from the penalty spot, as Mauricio Pochettino’s men continued their recent run of form.

“Today we played against a very aggressive team, so physical and yes, I’m so happy, so pleased,” Pochettino said. “The attitude and how we fought and approached the game was fantastic.”

Arsenal are fifth after a 2-0 win over sixth-placed Watford while Leicester are just behind in seventh thanks to a 2-0 win at Newcastle.

Felipe Anderson, a Victor Lindelof own goal and a third from Marko Arnautovic helped West Ham beat Manchester United and climb away from the relegation zone.

Everton beat Fulham 3-0 while Wolves saw off Southampton 2-0 in the day’s other matches. — dpa
