PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday he would seek “the broadest possible slate” for next year’s European elections, describing them as a “fight for civilisation.” But the centrist leader also sought to reclaim rhetorical ground from his opponents on the populist right, such as Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and Hungarian Premier Viktor Orban. “I am not a Europeanist or a globalist,” Macron told newspaper LeJournal du Dimanche. “I believe in every people’s strong identity, I believe in the history and ambition of our people,” Macron said. Salvini and Le Pen have portrayed next year’s European Parliament vote as a contest between their nationalist world view and Macron’s pro-EU liberalism. — DPA
