The latest tropical situation in the Arabian Sea is unlikely to have any direct impact on Muscat, but could affect the coastal areas of Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates. The Met department also urged people to depend only on official sources for weather updates. Speaking to the Observer, an official at the Met department said: “Bulletins will be issued from time to time over the next 24 hours and the situation is being closely monitored.” A statement from the Met office said: “Latest observations and satellite imageries showed development of a tropical low pressure area with surface wind speed ranging from 17 to 25 knots located southeast of the Arabian Sea at latitude 9.0°N and longitude 60.0°E. The centre of the tropical depression is 1,000 km away from Salalah. All indications show no direct effect on the Sultanate in the next coming three days.” Weather maps and numerical weather prediction suggest further development as the system moves westerly to northwesterly towards the coast of the governorates of Al Wusta and Dhofar.
