The legal code is ready to address issues related to cybercrime.

Legal professionals, however, have to update themselves with the provisions of law to give relief to their clients.

This was stated by Eisa Hamad al Azri, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, during a gathering of lawyers at Dar Al Kitab Library on Wednesday.

Al Azri told the Observer: “It is a challenge for everyone as the laws to deal with cybercrime are relatively new and the perpetrators of the crime are adopting new ways every now and then to dupe the Internet users.”

“Lawyers thus need to be prepared with all possible tools and proper study of the provisions of law to deal with cyber criminals and give respite to their clients,” he said.

He thanked the Lawyers’ Association for taking up the issue of cybercrime and gathering in Salalah during the monsoon season. “It is an important issue for which awareness should be created. I am happy the lawyers have decided to be here at the Salalah Tourism Festival (STF) ground also to talk about the issue,” said Al Azri.

He hinted at close coordination between the people working in digital and legal fields to come out with concrete tools to handle such crimes.

Meanwhile, lawyers discussed all aspects of cybercrime for two days in Salalah.

Three days from Wednesday, they will be at the STF to interact with the visitors.

Present at the discussion were a large number of lawyers, prosecutors and judicial officers.

They sought active participation of the community to understand the basic tenets of the crime and remedies offered by the Omani law.

Legal experts also sought regional cooperation to deal with the issue and called for the legal community to spend time in understanding ways and means to offer an effective legal remedy. In one of the papers, Hatim al Barami, Administrative Court Judge at Salalah Court, prepared a draft map for lawyers and gave an outline on how to write and make agreements.

Dr Hussain al Ghafri spoke on rules and regulations to deal with cyber criminals, while Nasr Assawai presented systemic procedures and follow-ups.
