Legal action mooted for crossing wadis

Muscat, Dec 17 - Despite warnings, vehicles continue to get stuck while crossing wadis. Which begs the question: should the irresponsible drivers be slapped with legal action for crossing wadis?

The Public Prosecution has said intentionally crossing the wadis and endangering lives of fellow passengers is a crime punishable by imprisonment for three months and a fine of RO 500.

The Royal Oman Police (ROP) and Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA) keeps updating the public on social media about overflowing wadis. Yet, motorists ignore these warnings and cross them.

Apart from the efforts of the ROP, PACDA and the Muscat Municipality, awareness campaigns are conducted from time to time to educate the people about adverse weather conditions and the importance of not stepping out of home unless necessary and not to cross overflowing wadis.

The issue was widely discussed on social media. Many felt legal action should be taken and fines should be slapped on those ignoring such warnings and risking others’ lives.
