The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has reiterated that jumping the red signal is a criminal offence, which can be detected through images captured by radars. The captured data will be processed for legal action. The vehicle will be seized and the driver will be arrested, said a latest statement issued by the ROP. As per Article 130 of the executive regulations of the Traffic Law, a driver can be arrested for a period not exceeding 48 hours for the purpose of investigation. Similarly, Article (130/N) of the same regulation allows the seizure of vehicle for violation.

Captain Ishaq al Toobi of the ROP said any crime has to be investigated based on tangible and intangible evidences. Various factors, including the emergency situation that could have led to the overrun, will be taken into the account. “It will also consider when the overrun resulted in a traffic congestion or accident,” he said. He said jumping the red signal is one of the “deliberate or intentional crimes” and it can be proved if the crime was committed due to negligence or lack of caution.

Currently, drivers who fail to stop at a red light can be jailed for up to one year. Jumping the red light is among the most severe of traffic violations, in which the offending driver risks a jail sentence of up to a year and a fine of up to RO 500, or one of these punishments. Meanwhile, the number of road accidents in the Sultanate dropped by 7.3 per cent in August 2018 compared with the same month in 2017, according to the latest statistics released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). A total of 215 road accidents were recorded in August.
