MUSCAT: The Information Technology Authority (ITA) and the Oman Telecommunication Company (OmanTel) have recently signed an agreement to renew the Oman Government Network (OGN) contract. The contract was first signed in July 2006 for the period of five years and then it was renewed in 2011 for another five years.

This is the second renewal of the contract and Dr. Salim Sultan Al Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA, and Talal Saeed Al Maamari, CEO of Omantel, signed it at the ITA Headquarters in KOM. According to the contract, Omantel will provide the government entities with Network links using Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology, which has strict Service Level Agreements (SLAs) to ensure the best quality of service. For this five-year renewed contract, the ITA and Omantel added an option to connect using 3G/4G as an alternative option for remote areas.

On this occasion, Dr. Salim Al Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA, stated, “We thank the Oman Telecommunication Company (Omantel) for their continuous support to the government projects and initiatives and we are delighted to continue our cooperation with the company in the Oman Government Network (OGN) project which started in 2006 to interconnect all government entities. OGN witnessed great collaboration from the government entities and by end of 2016, 80 government entities were connected with around 1040 government locations. We renewed the contract for other five years with more options and this year we added an option to connect using 3G or 4G for remote areas.”

Al Ruzaiqi added on the importance of the network, “The OGN is an important telecommunication infrastructure project that aims to support and link other eGovernment initiatives and ultimately improve public services. In addition to providing a secure network that government entities can rely on.”

Talal Saeed Al Maamari CEO of Omantel, said “We are proud to be the government’s trusted partner, to support its digital transformation strategy by connecting all private and government institutions in an integrated and innovative telecommunications network. This support is an indicator that we are effectively implementing our 3.0 transformation strategy”.

Omantel’s CEO pointed out that under the terms of this agreement; in partnership with ITA, we are working to interconnect the government institutions through (IPMPLS) technology. This project is expected to provide the primary infrastructure between government institutions, where Omantel will play the biggest part in providing the network and connecting the government institutions through (IPMPLS) technology.
