Muscat – The Information Technology Authority (ITA) warned people to avoid clicking on a link that will allow users to change the colour of WhatsApp.
The ITA issued a statement explaining that the link was spelled as follows: шһатѕарр(dot)com. It contains a series of symbols that spell out the word ‘Whatsapp,’ however they are symbols rather than letters.
The authority added that the link contains an adware virus and hence recommends that users refrain from visiting such sites and use the application’s official website instead.
“I did try to follow the link but felt something fishy as it was different from the usual WhatsApp site. So I decided to change my mind,” said Aisha, a receptionist.
According to reviews on reddit.com, the first place where the scam was notified, a fake website was setup to try and persuade WhatsApp users to download an adware onto their phone. шһатѕарр.com has been setup in an attempt to get users to download a new colors update that would allow them to change the colour of their WhatsApp.
People who click the fake шһатѕарр.com link will be asked to share the link to multiple groups. Once the link has been shared adware will be installed onto the user’s device. Once the adware is installed a message saying that WhatsApp colors is only available on WhatsApp web and a link to a chrome extension is given.
