IT experts caution students on exposure to smartphones

SALALAH, Oct 22 - It is the man who controls the technology or technology controls the man? A debatable question, which was answered in a very terse manner by the IT experts taking part in a seminar titled “Mobile phone: A dangerous friend?”.


The title was self-explanatory that too much of anything is not good, not even a companion like mobile phone, which has become a part and parcel of every human being.


It is taking alarming proportion with many people keeping more than one or two smartphones, exposing themselves more to radiation than expected.


The seminar for creating awareness about ‘A dangerous friend’ among the students was held at Salalah College of Technology (SCT).


It was successful in sending a message among the participating students.


Speakers Nesaian Reginal Wilfred and Jasmin A Tumulak presented excellent background of the tool, which has turned out to be the most sought after tool in the current civilisation with huge advantages and disadvantages attached to it.


They spoke about the pros and cons of using the smart phones while focusing on the mobile phone radiations, health effects, control measures, safety tips and overall health awareness.


They spoke on the advantages of smartphone apps that support in student learning process and also demonstrated the use of mobile cloud storage, the most challenging and recent storage trend where people look for a centralised space.


Video presentations on evolution of mobile phones and radiations effects attracted the audience.


Many questions raised by the students were duly answered by the experts, as there was unanimity among all the speakers that the radiation harms and there should always be cautious way of handling mobile phones.


This mega awareness programme was an initiative of the ‘IT Student Club’ of the SCT. Department faculties Dr Fatima Abdullah Said al Shanfari welcomed the gathering and Mohammed Mushtaq Ahmed introduced the newly elected IT student club leaders.


Head of the IT Department Viji Paul honoured the IT student club leaders and felicitated by a motivational talk that encouraged the students to involve and organise more activities for the welfare of the Omani community.
