Salalah: The Eco Club of Indian School Salalah took part in a beach cleaning event which was held under the aegis of the Ministry of Environment and Climatic Affairs, Dhofar Governorate. The event marked Omani Environment Day, which is observed every year on January 8.

The programme was inaugurated by Abdul Qader Ahmed al Haddad, Vice-President of Dhofar Municipality. As a token of encouragement, Indian School Salalah was given a memento and appreciated for its efforts in taking part in such awareness campaigns.

The initiative instilled much enthusiasm and environmental awareness among the pupils. The President of the School Management Committee Ram Santhanam and Principal T R Brown expressed gratitude towards the teachers for their contribution and appreciated the efforts of the Eco Club and Social Studies Department.

The Eco Club has been creating environmental awareness among the students since its inception. It works towards an eco-friendly environment in and around the school and thereby contributing towards saving our planet. It has been established to provide the values of environmental consciousness and to develop environmental ethics among students. It constantly strives to create a ‘clean and green attitude’ among students through various innovative methods.

In the first phase of the programme, the Eco Club members planted saplings in the school premises to ensure conservation of the nature and environmental care towards a green future. This event provided a chance for the children to have fun and learn about how to look after the environment around them.

In the second phase, 30 students from the Eco Club accompanied by four teachers participated in the beach cleaning event. The vision is to build a grass-root volunteering movement and to engage, train and mobilise the community to keep the beaches clean.
