Intl workshop deliberates on food and brain health

MUSCAT: The 5th International Workshop on Food and Brain Health, organised by the Food Science and Nutrition Department at the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences, in association with the Ageing and Dementia Research Group (ADRG) at SQU, was opened under the patronage of HH Sayyidah Dr Mona bint Fahd al Said, Assistant Vice-Chancellor for International Cooperation at SQU.


The two-day workshop covers a range of topics from the definition, causes and treatment for neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive impairment to research findings on dietary practices and their unique role on health. Around ten international speakers from USA, Qatar and India will share their experiences along with speakers from Oman and international students who will present their work.


Delivering the welcome address, Dr Rashid al Yahyai, Dean of the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences, said that the workshop is open to participants from different walks of life with the aim of creating awareness on the impact of food, nutrition on brain health, throughout the whole life.


HH Sayyidah Dr Mona welcomed the participants and speakers from Oman and abroad for attending this valued event that sheds light on a number of relevant topics related to food and brain health.


Dr Ahmed al Alawi, Head of the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at SQU, said that the faculty and researchers at the department is always keen to exert hard work to discuss important research and latest scientific developments in the fields of food science and human nutrition with special focus on Omani society.


The first talk was presented by Prof Richard Hartman from Loma Linda University, California, USA, on the topic “actions of bioactive phytochemicals in neuropathological conditions”.


Quoting research data, he said that dietary supplementation with bioactive phytochemicals may attenuate age and insult-related neuropathology and associated behavioural consequences. Dr Velusamy Thiruvnavakksarsu from Bharathiyar University, India, spoke about nutritional psychiatry, an emerging concept to treat mental disorders.


The keynote session was chaired by Dr Ahmed al Alawi. Dr Rafat Siddiqui from Virginia State University, Prof Walid Qoronfleh from World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH), Qatar, Prof Samir al Adawi from SQU, Oman, and Prof Safiullah from Chennai gave talks on various topics related to brain health and food.
