MUSCAT: Thousands of Spartans pushed past their limits in this year’s XDubai Spartan Trifecta race hosted by Jebel Sifah, the first Trifecta weekend to be held in the region as well as the last Trifecta weekend in the 2018 global Spartan calendar. The event’s guest of honour, Maitha al Mahrouqi, Under-Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, handed out awards to the winners from three Spartan events including the Sprint, Super and Beast.

“Globally, sports tourism is estimated to be worth $800 billion (RO 308 billion) and we have seen a continuing increase in demand within the Sultanate over the years. The annual Spartan race is a wonderful example of the magnitude of interest from individuals around the world in sports tourism within Oman. Needless to mention the role which Muriya has played in hosting such internationally acclaimed events has been profound,” said Maitha al Mahrouqi.

“From white sandy beaches extending as far as the eye can see to refreshing oasis, mountainous terrains and much more, Oman’s topographic diversity makes it an ideal host for such activities.”

Ahmed Dabbous, CEO at Muriya, said, “Jebel Sifah experienced tremendous growth in recent years as Muscat’s premier destination, particularly from a number of residents and visitors’ standpoint. This has been a natural progression for this town-in-the-making and hosting such international sporting events will see us continue our solid performance in all development segments, including real estate, tourism, retail and hospitality.

“Oman is the perfect location for international competitions and we are looking to further strengthen the Sultanate’s profile in this regard globally.”

With participants from 30 countries around the world competing, only a handful rose above the rest, earning their titles as Spartan champions.

Elites Richard Hynek from the Czech Republic and Myriam Guilliot from France conquered the Spartan Beast, Spartan’s most difficult race with 21 km of obstacles and hurdles. Thomas Satinsky from the Czech Republic and Ivana Kolaric from Serbia took the second place, while Jacky Boisset from France and Adela Vorackova from the Czech Republic came in third.

Champions of the 14-km Spartan Super race included Thomas Satinsky from the Czech Republic and Myriam Guilliot from France in first place, Richard Hynek and Adela Vorackova both from the Czech Republic in second and Jacky Boisset from France and Ivana Kolaric from Serbia in third.

In the Spartan Sprint, Spartan’s 8 km and shortest race, Richard Hynek from the Czech Republic and Myriam Guilliot from France came in first place.

Thomas Satinsky and Adela Vorackova both from the Czech Republic also battled to the finish line, coming in second place, while Hallvard Borshem from Norway and Serena Bracalini from Italy came in third.
