By Kabeer Yousuf — MUSCAT: May 22 - The Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (PACDA) has recommended smoke detectors/ sensors for homes to prevent fire accidents. However, it is not mandatory for residential buildings and houses to install smoke detectors or other gadgets to warn of fires. “Those building new houses should use proper quality materials that can prevent fire and related accidents,” PACDA has said. “Use quality wires and electrical/ electronic gadgets in residential buildings or houses as a precautionary measure. Also install smoke detectors so that losses can be mitigated in case of a fire,” said First Lieutenant Khalid al Salti, Head of Public Relations Affairs at PACDA.

Speaking to the Observer after the fire that claimed two lives in Mabela, Al Salti requested everyone to switch off electrical/ electronic gadgets, and household appliances before going to bed every day. “One should be alert against domestic accidents. The need is even more when children are around.” Though no data is available on the number of domestic accidents, both the Royal Oman Police (ROP) and PACDA have ongoing campaigns educating people about the potential domestic accidents. The number of domestic accidents rises during summer. “One needs to take all precautions to keep lives and properties safe during summer,” said the PACDA official.
