Inflation touches 1.03 per cent

MUSCAT: The Sultanate’s year-on-year consumer price index (CPI) for August touched 1.03 per cent, driven by a rise in furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance, education and housing, water electricity, gas and other fuels, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).


The major cause of price rise was a 3.45-per cent rise in furnishings and household equipment in August this year compared with the same period in 2016. Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels saw a 1.47-per cent rise, while foods and non-alcoholic beverages rose 1.09 per cent.


The price of clothing and footwear rose by 0.25 per cent compared with August 2016, while education witnessed a 2.84-per cent jump.


While the cost of healthcare rose 0.39 per cent, that of recreation and culture went up 0.33 per cent.


Communication set fell by 2.95 per cent, while transport prices rose 1.20 per cent. Food and beverages set and price of fish and seafood became dearer by 6.49 per cent and fruits by 3.48 per cent. — ONA
