Inflation rate rises 1.13 pc in August

Muscat: The inflation rate in the Sultanate recorded an increase of 1.13 per cent in August 2018 compared to the same month of the previous year.


This increase was attributed to the rise in price of transport by 6.24 per cent, education 4.9 per cent, miscellaneous goods and services 0.76 per cent, housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels 0.6 per cent, restaurants and hotels 0.59 per cent.


The price of health services decreased by 3.06 per cent, food and non-alcoholic beverages 1.17 per cent), clothing & footwear 0.94 per cent, furnishings, household equipment, maintenance 0.73 per cent, recreation and culture 0.35 per cent, communication 0.31 per cent, tobacco 0.14 per cent, during August compared to the same month of the previous year.


The general prices index recorded a decrease by 0.02 per cent during August, due to the decrease price of clothing & footwear 0.22 per cent, transport 0.15 per cent, communications 0.02 per cent,


recreation and culture 0.09 per cent and miscellaneous goods and services 0.04 per cent.


On the other hand, the prices of foods & non-alcoholic beverages rose by 0.06 per cent, due to the price increase of vegetables by 1.27 per cent, fruits by 0.9 per cent, and milk, cheese and eggs, cooking oil by 0.12 per cent each.


The governorates of the Sultanate witnessed a rise in the inflation rate for August 2018 compared to the same month of the previous year.


The index recorded an increase of 2.09 per cent in Al Batinah North, Dhofar 2.01 per cent, Al Dakhiliyah 1.13 per cent, Muscat 0.7 per cent, Al Dhahirah 0.61 per cent, South and North Al Sharqiyah 0.57 per cent, and Al Buraimi 0.13 per cent.
