Indian Independence Day hockey festival

MUSCAT: A hockey festival to commemorate 71st Independence Day of India will be held in Muscat on August 11.


A meeting was held under the auspices of Ambassador of India Indramani Pandey at his office recently to finalise the event. SAS Naqvi and Bellu Kuttappa, members of the organising committee, met the Ambassador.


Indramani Pandey will be the chief guest of the event.


Dr Hammad Hamed al Ghafri, Adviser of Ministry of Civil Services and former president of Oman Olympic Committee will be the guest of honour.


Captain Talib Khamis al Wahaibi, the Chairman of Oman Hockey Association will be also the guest of honour.


Under the auspices of Embassy of India, the celebrations of Republic Day, Independence Day and Dhyanchand Trophy are being organised since 2005. Former Indian stars Ashok Kumar, who is Dhyanchand’s son, Mir Ranjan Negi and Dhanraj Pillay have been to Muscat as chief guests in earlier editions of the Dhyanchand Trophy celebrations. This year it is planned to invite 1964 Olympian Ali Saeed from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India.


The programme will include the Independence Day hockey trophy to be contested by Team Coorg Muscat, UTSC Muscat, Beatrice XI and Oman Veterans along with Coorg Hockey team from Dubai.


The Ambassador Cup will contested by Ambassador’s XI and Indian School Al Seeb. There will be women’s Independence Day Cup with Indian School Al Seeb and Indian School Al Maabela vying for the cup.


The national anthem will be presented by Indian School Al Seeb as they have done for past seven years.


The Indian School Al Seeb marching band will hold march past.


The organisers of the celebration have introduced to honour the talented youth from among the Indian community. Plans are there to announce a talented school student for sports.


Kanchan Bijlani, one of the organiser and in charge of women’s section, will conduct the anthem for the boy’s and girl’s less than 10 years of age. They will awarded participation certificates by the Indian Ambassador.


Besides other prizes all participants will be presented certificates signed by the Indian Ambassador.
