Muscat, Oct 2 - Physical inactivity is the fourth major risk for premature deaths worldwide, causing 3.2 million deaths every year, Dr Huda bint Khalfan al Siyabiyah, Ministry of Health’s Director of Social Initiatives, said on Tuesday. Speaking at the celebration of Oman Physical Activity Day, Dr Al Siyabiyah said that regular exercise improves health of organs such as heart, circulatory, respiratory and nervous systems, muscles, joints and bones, as well as mental health. The day coincides with the World Walking Day, which is celebrated around the world this month.

The celebration was held under the patronage of Shaikh Saad bin Mohammed al Saadi, Minister of Sport Affairs. Dr Ali bin Talib al Hinai, Under-Secretary, Ministry of Health for Planning Affairs and Chairman of the National Non-Communicable Diseases Committee, were also present. The event saw daily sports activities, traditional/entertainment sports, fitness exercises, Capoeira, a form of martial art, and skiing. There was also a health corner.

It saw participation from both government and private institutions. Targeted at citizens as well as residents across the Sultanate, the event was aimed at promoting positive lifestyles and enhancing physical activity through partnerships among government sectors and community members.

It was also aimed at reducing stress on both workers and non-workers through daily physical activity, encouraging physical activity at the work environment, which will contribute to raising productivity.
