SALALAH, Sept 26 - The Sultanate is making pace with the international labour norms and has ratified four ILO (International Labour Organisation) conventions on fundamentals principles and rights of work. A senior ILO representative stated this as participants at an international workshop on labour norms discussed range of issues and progresses that the Sultanate has made in this direction. The event is being held under the joint auspices of Ministry of Manpower and ILO with participation from Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) and General Federation for Trade Unions (GFTU). The two-day event opened at Millennium Resort Salalah on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Naif Ahmed Said al Shanfari, Director of Labour Care Department in the Ministry of Manpower.

Talking to the Observer, Torsten Schackel, ILO’s Regional Advisor on International Labour Standards and Labour Law at regional office for Arab States, said the ILO had long cooperation with Oman and “it is due to its right labour policies that the country is building a vision and achieving it.” “It is important to have social dialogue between the three parties — employers, employees and regulators — and Oman has made good progress. It has ratified four of the ILO conventions on fundamentals principles and rights of work. I hope Sultanate will take more steps to integrate the international labour standards.”
