MILAN: Serie A league officials on Friday upheld Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi’s two-match ban but halved Ivan Perisic’s sanction to one game following incidents in a 1-0 defeat to Juventus. Argentinian Icardi and Croatia midfielder Perisic were both handed two-game bans for the abuse of the match referee at the end of a fiery encounter in Turin last week that saw the visitors denied credible claims for a penalty on two occasions. Inter appealed the sanctions but were given only partial satisfaction. Icardi’s ban is unchanged — he receives a “two-game ban plus a 10,000 euros fine” — while Perisic “now receives a one-game ban and a 10,000 euros fine”, according to a statement by Serie A officials.

For Inter, it was a frustrating end to arguably one of the best league games of the season. Their Champions League qualifying hopes took a direct hit. Icardi had been denied penalties following fouls by Giorgio Chiellini and Mario Mandzukic and in the dying minutes expressed his ire by “making insults and rude gestures to the referee as well as kicking the ball at him, without hitting him”, said a statement following last week’s decision. Perisic was shown a straight red card for comments he made to the referee in the fourth and last minute of added-on time. “In the 49th minute of the second half (Perisic) repeated a series of seriously disrespectful expressions to the match referee,” it added.

The result left Inter, treble winners in 2010 when Jose Mourinho guided them to the Champions League, in fifth place 15 points behind Juventus and six adrift of Napoli, in third. Inter will miss both Icardi and Perisic for Sunday’s visit of Empoli although the Croatian can return for the trip to Bologna a week later. — AFP
