Sydney: Keisuke Honda’s Melbourne Victory kept the pressure on Perth Glory at the top of the A-League this weekend, stretching their winning streak to six games with a thrilling 4-2 triumph.

All the goals came in the first half of Friday’s away win at Brisbane Roar that also featured two penalties and a red card.

Japan’s Honda got on the scoresheet again with his fifth of the season to help his club — the reigning champions — move to 18 points from eight games, two behind Perth who remain unbeaten. They beat Newcastle Jets 2-0 on Sunday with first-half goals from Neil Kilkenny and Jason Davidson.

Victory coach Kevin Muscat praised his team’s discipline. “So much happened in the first half, it was just action-packed,” he said.

“I think from our perspective, we were really controlled about how we went about things, really controlled when the game was fiery, really controlled in our football and played some really good stuff.”

Sydney FC are third on the ladder after beating Western Sydney Wanderers 3-1 in a derby match on Saturday — their fourth win in a row against their cross-town rivals.

In other games, Wellington Phoenix piled more pressure on the Central Coast Mariners in a 2-0 win on Saturday. It leaves the Mariners — who gave an unsuccessful trial to Usain Bolt — in dire straights and anchored to the bottom of the table with just two points from a possible 24. — AFP
