Hollande invites Merkel, Rajoy and Gentiloni to summit

MADRID: French President Francois Hollande has invited German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the prime ministers of Spain and Italy, Mariano Rajoy and Paolo Gentiloni, to a summit at Versailles later this year. The meeting, scheduled for March, is intended as preparation for the EU summit on March 25, the Europa Press news agency reported on Monday, citing sources in government circles.
March 25 also marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, which established the European Economic Community, the predecessor to the modern European Union.
France hopes that the four heads of government will agree common positions on key themes in Europe, such as refugee policy and the fight against IS, the report said. Hollande was in the Spanish city of Malaga on Monday for a one-day meeting with Rajoy.
