Muscat, Feb 4 - Every time we visit the supermarket, we handpick vegetables or fruits, while ensuring they are not too ripe or too raw. What if you’re allowed to pick your choice of veggies or fruits directly at the farm?

Thanks to renewed interest in healthy and simple living, the ‘farm to table’ movement is slowly making a comeback.

Said al Hinai, a national from Bahla, could be a pioneer in starting this concept, which has become a hit among both citizens and expatriates.

His farm, which grows a variety of fruits and vegetables, sees a huge turnout every day.

“Our farm gives customers a chance to pick up their order directly from the trees. When customers pick the vegetables or fruits themselves, they feel more satisfied,” said Al Hinai.

Speaking about the quality of his farm produce, he says he uses only organic fertilizers. “Pesticides are used only during some seasons to get rid of insects.”

“Fruits and veggies that are exported are transported long distances. As a result, they are picked before they are ripe enough. They are frozen to prevent spoilage or preserved with the help of chemicals. All this results in food that is bland and less nutritious,” Al Hinai said.

This concept helps boost the local economy and support local farmers as farm-to-table restaurants deal directly with farmers.

In the future, Al Hinai plans to tie up with restaurants and travel agencies to get his farm included in their tourism itinerary.

According to him, his project can serve as a training ground for children. Kids can be taught the basics of gardening at the farm, which will raise their agricultural awareness.

“Taking the children to the farm will encourage healthy choices in them and help develop appreciation for environment,” he added.
