Haya Water organises environment conference

MUSCAT: Haya Water participated in the World Earth Day celebrations by organising environmental and scientific conference in cooperation with Be’ah Company. The conference participants presented three working papers on the scientific and sound methods of dealing with waste and solid and liquid waste resulting from sewage or household waste.


Hussain bin Abdullhussain, Haya Water CEO, said: “The conference reflects our sustainable corporate message which is making Oman greener and healthier. We have an integral role to play and to protect the planet through building, operating and maintaining an advanced wastewater system across Oman except Governorate of Dhofar that contributes in making the environment cleaner and healthier, and reduces the reliance on fresh groundwater sources for irrigation, landscaping, productive agriculture and other industrial and commercial purposes in order to achieve water security strategy.’’


Hussain confirmed that Haya Water currently is studying to utilise the sludge from sewage treatment plants to produce electricity.


He added that today we will be listening attentively to three different presentations from different partners and stakeholders. We believe that collaboration with all stakeholders is very healthy and very important to have a better future because it enables us to share concerns, share knowledge and put practical solutions for many issues.


Fahad al Kharousi, Head of Business Development, Be’ah Company, said: “We are working together with Haya Water to protect our environment. We have highlighted many common issues, including the transfer of waste water (sludge) to energy, as well as solutions, exchange of experiences and knowledge in the fields of environment.”


Dareen Mehdi, Board Member of Environment Society of Oman, presented a working paper entitled: “Earth Day, every day”. She highlighted the dangerous of using plastics. For example, chemical leached from plastic into food and beverages stored in plastics can have serious health implications.


Sulieman al Qasmi, Assets Management GM, also presented a working paper which highlighted the importance of the waste water project to protect environment and to prevent from many diseases.


Al Qasmi stated that Haya Water contributes significantly to the closure of many waste water dumps in the different governorates such as Jaalan Bani Bu Ali dump and Nizwa dump. The company is coordinating with the concerned authorities to close down more dumps.


Hanan bint Yousif al Balushi, Corporate Communication Manager at Haya Water, said: “Celebrating Earth Day is an opportunity for all to have a closer look at the seriousness challenges facing the environment and put practical ways and solutions to save the planet free from pollution. This conference was carried out to emphasise the importance of collaboration that tackles many environmental issues.”
