Halwa factory shut after video goes viral

Muscat, Oct 14 - A halwa factory was closed by the authorities after a video went viral about the unhygienic preparation methods used at its premises.

The Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources said in a statement it had ordered closure of the factory as non-edible plastic buckets were used in the preparation of sweets and halwa.

The video showed some expatriate workers using plastic containers to store and transfer freshly prepared hot halwa.

Arguments centred around the fact that the preparation process violated all health and hygiene safety norms.

The ministry said all factories and sweets/halwa shops should comply with the standard requirements and specifications. Strict legal action will be initiated against violators.

On social media, there was a call for an efficient mechanism to monitor the activities of all sweet factories because Omani halwa is a global brand.

Some argued that the culprits should be punished.
