A green campaign called the ‘Green Wadis Initiative in the Sultanate’ was launched recently to save different valleys in the Sultanate from desertification.

The initiative was launched by the National Field Research Centre for Environmental Conversation at the Diwan of Royal Court.

It aims to restore the country’s natural and environmental balance by planting wild trees and accomplishing environmental, tourism, economic, social and sporting goals.

Several organisations are involved in the initiative, including Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources, Muscat Municipality, Sultan Qaboos University, German University, besides other associations in the private sector.

The first stage will be executed in the Al Ansab area (Muscat Governorate).

The natural and environmental balance of the wadis will be reset by planting wild trees such as cedar, Ghaf, Alhua and many others along the wadis’ route.

The trees will benefit from the shallow water collected on the banks of wadis and grow naturally in their habitat.

The Sultanate has a unique green cover with over 1,295 kinds of plants, 136 of which face extinction threat because of the climatic changes, drought, lack of water and desertification, besides logging, pollution, development and overgrazing.

The wadis have been affected by desertification, accelerated development and shovelling of soil and fossils.

Valleys have become dumping grounds for rubbish and remnants of buildings, ruining their environment and tourism prospects.

The new initiative will help in preserving and developing the green cover.

It will save wild trees from extinction as well as restore environmental, tourism and economic importance of the wadis.
