Muscat, Sept 11 - The Muscat Municipality is currently on a grading exercise for restaurants in the capital and classifying them according to different criteria, it is learnt. A highly placed source at the Restaurants Evaluation Department that keeps a check on hygiene at eateries, said that restaurants will be classified based on different parameters. “We are visiting restaurants to make sure they adhere to the stipulated standards and specifications,” the department spokesperson told the Observer.

The restaurants will be benchmarked against the best practices in the region.

They will be classified based on the quality of food offered, ambience, quality of service, appearance of staff, their attitude, hygiene, safety, besides their overall appearance.

“Several restaurants that have not conformed to standards have been warned. Comply with standards quickly or face punitive action,” they have been told. Random checks are carried out at restaurants in addition to regular checks. Restaurants in the capital were issued notices some months ago to carry out repairs and other important works.

The civic body will create a database of restaurants, take measures to improve safety standards besides grading them based on the best practices in terms of food, service and management.

The inspection campaign that began some months ago has evaluated of 90 per cent of restaurants in the Wilayat of Bausher, while the same at other restaurants will happen soon.
