By Fahad Al Ghadani — MUSCAT: Feb. 26 - Sailors will have to apply for a ‘sailor identity’ for working on Omani ships, according to a new ministerial decision issued by the Ministry of Transport and Communication (MoTC). The decision No 42/2017, signed by Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Futaisi, Minister of Transport and Communications, came into effect on February 22. The decision says no one is allowed to work on an Omani ship unless he gets a sailor identity. Candidates for the identity should be above 18 years and certified fit by a medical establishment approved by the ministry. They should have certificates and qualifications issued or approved by the marine authorities. The ministry had announced 12 types of certificates for sailors. The identity is valid for five years, according to the ministry’s decision. Those violating the decision will be fined not less than RO 50 and not more than RO 200.
