Geological, archeological surveys start in Mazyounah

Muscat: The Ministry of Heritage and Culture launched surveys in cooperation with the Omani Geological Mission and a group of foreign specialists in the Wilayat of Al Mazyounah in Dhofar Governorate to study the geological and climatic changes, and the history of human settlement. The research includes understanding the distribution of modern sediments in the area and taking samples to determine the age of deposition, study of ancient waterways as well as the study of the distribution of antiquities. This area contains sand dunes and old lakes, as well as an ancient stone tools dating back to different periods of the Neolithic including arrowheads, animal holdfasts, rockers and many more. The ministry has launched 22 archaeological surveys in the 2018-2019 season across the Sultanate’s governorates in cooperation with Sultan Qaboos University, universities and institutions from the UK, Germany, Italy, the USA, France, Holland, Poland, Czech Republic and Japan. — ONA
