How many mobile phones do you own? How many other gadgets do you use to communicate?

Do you remember the time in Oman when we used to refer our mobile phones as GSM? The Global Mobile System was referred to as cellphones in some countries. Now, it seems to have been settled for just being mobile phone.

In the past, having car phone was ‘big’. What an impressive takeover by technology where a mobile phone is not just for saying hello but also for doing business, shopping, entertaining and learning.

January 18 will see the use of first electric car charging stations in the country. The forecast is that the number of electric cars could rise to 140 million by 2035 and the cost could soon be similar to the traditional cars, say industry pundits.

The earth will definitely be celebrating because breathing would be so much easier. Then the talk is about driverless vehicles.

We are also trying to digest the concept of crypto currency. This entire move forward implies we have to get used to the fact that there are many changes coming in our direction.

Each decade has seen us leap to advanced technology that had its impact on our lifestyle, ranging from healthcare to commercial industries.

Students of today have to plan ahead on their majors to secure the right positions or develop the right aptitude in a world where the dynamics are going to be quite different to what we are used to currently.

In more ways than one, the young ones are almost groomed for it as we can see from the video games. The virtual reality is all together another world.

Innovative thinking and problem-solving skills are to be encouraged according to experts in human resources. Don’t you think it would be nice if even adults can be encouraged to develop these skills?

The National Innovation Strategy of Oman is looking at this in a parallel way, focusing on individuals working in public and private sectors to introduce the concept of innovative thinking and problem-solving.

“We are now in the phase of discussing and agreeing on which sector we will go by or at which level to begin with. We have started with students and the Ministry of Education,” said Hannat al Hinaiya, Head of the Human Capital Pillar of the National Innovation Strategy (NIS).

Many a times, organisations push aside staff members describing they are old-fashioned, but the fact that they did not have the exposure to the latest concepts or technology.

Having said that, it is only a fact that in tomorrow’s world the most successful people who are going to establish themselves and sustain their success will be the ones who are self-driven.

In the digital world knowledge is easy to have access to. Entrepreneurial skills are going to be a necessity. It might probably be the first time when so many individuals are going to be required to have entrepreneurial skills. This also could mean it is the season for some of the best ideas to come up, but it is also going to be competitive.

Awareness at all levels could be the slogan of tomorrow. Environment is very much going to be in simply because we had taken nature for granted for so long. Science and technology will continue to enjoy the spotlight with professions dealing with artificial intelligence and renewable energy holding job prospects.

Artificial intelligence could also take away many jobs that could be replaced by technology. But human touch has a signature of its own. Just like ATMs changed lifestyles, the mind shift could be achieved. An example is the mobile phone usage itself with the world connected crossing all barriers and levels. So let’s start exploring. Let us embrace the change.
