NEW DELHI: President Ram Nath Kovind will on Friday present Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military decoration, posthumously to Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala, a Garud Commando of the Indian Air Force (IAF) who died fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.

Corporal Nirala, a commando of the elite special force of the IAF, was part of an offensive launched jointly by the Garud detachment and Rashtriya Rifles Battalion in Chanderger village of Bandipora district on November 18, 2017.

HIGH ALERT: Extraordinary security marked the Republic Day eve in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday as security forces were put on high alert following an intelligence input that a teenaged female suicide bomber may carry out an attack in the state.

Ever since armed violence started in the state in the late 1980s, securing various venues for Republic Day ceremonial parades has been a challenge for the security forces.

This year, however, vigil has been taken to new heights in Jammu and Srinagar. — IANS
