A Court of First Instance recently issued orders against four commercial establishments under Consumer Protection Act, which included imprisonment and fines amounting to RO2,398.

Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) received a complaint from a consumer against a mobile phone dealer. He was sold a used one instead of a new one.

The court order compensated for the value of the phone, which amounted to RO298.

In the second sentence, the department received a complaint from a consumer against a business that refused to respect the terms of the agreement. The third sentence was against a tailor following a complaint from a customer.

The Consumer Protection Department of South Batinah negotiated an amicable settlement between a consumer and a car dealer, which included the return of down payment and cheques amounting to RO23,400, besides returning the car to the dealer.

The department had received a complaint stating several parts of the brand new car had rusted. It also had layers of lime in the chassis with signs of dismantling, painting, scratches and repair paste in the front fender, in addition to many other defects.

The consumer requested a refund of the down payment and returning the car but was not able to reach agreement. He lodged a complaint with the department to resolve the problem.

The department coordinated with the employees of the car dealer and an amicable settlement was reached to return the car to the dealer and refund the down payment to the consumer who accepted the settlement for the damages the dealer incurred.
