Forum puts stress on safe, effective use of medicines

SALALAH, Oct. 2 – The role of the pharmacists in providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care and enhancing the level of health services were discussed during the Dhofar Pharmacy Forum held in presence of senior health officials, medical experts and pharmacists drawn from different parts of Oman. The event highlighted safe and effective use of medicines and importance of pharmacy professionals, who play major role in health management of patients. It also exhorted the pharmacists to keep on upgrading their knowledge about developments in the health sector.
Said bin Ahmed Jaboob, Director-General of Pharmacy, explained the special position occupied by the pharmaceutical sector in the medical system and said it reflected in this year’s global theme of ‘Scientific research on pharmaceutical care, pharmacist at your service’.
The event, according to him, coincided with the International Day of Pharmacy. He gave an outline of strategy being adopted by the Ministry of Health to upgrade the performance of the sector and sense the challenges being faced by the pharmacy professionals and staff to make pace with the rapid developments in all areas of professional practices and the application of the latest quality standards to improve the pharmaceutical work in line with the main role of the pharmacists as one of the main pillars of the healthcare structure.
The event opened under the auspices of Mohammed bin Abu Bakr al Ghassani, Vice-Chairman of Majlis Ash’shura. Dr Khalid bin Mohammed al Mashaikhi, Director-General of Health Services in Dhofar, exhorted the pharmacy staff to have a passionate feeling for the patients and hailed the event organisers for their commitment to a right cause. “This initiative is in line with the Sultanate’s commitment to bring about a qualitative change in the healthcare sector,” he said. Topics like quality indicators of pharmaceutical care; Impact of drug policy and impact on patient care; Anti-Microbial stewardship; Supply chain management; and Cold chain management were covered during the forum.

Kaushalendra Singh
