MUSCAT: Former pro Andreas Kloden, one of Germany’s most successful professional cyclists was hosted by Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa during the recent ultimate cycling weekend. A paradise for road cyclists, more than 30 fitness enthusiasts participated in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity spending three days cycling hundreds of kilometres and tackling Oman’s renowned climbs with 2000 Olympic Games bronze medallist, Andreas Klöden

The resort provided the perfect location for the training weekend, which took place from December 7-10. Starting from Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa each morning, the group amassed more than 300km as they explored the familiar sites of Muscat and beyond including the Royal Opera House, the Grand Mosque, and out past Muscat International Airport. Along more scenic routes, the cyclists conquered rolling hills and inclines along scenic roads through the majestic Al Hajar Mountains while taking in stunning views of the Gulf of Oman through local villages including Yiti, Al Sifah, Bandar Al Khiran, and Al Ameerat.

Speaking of the cycling weekend, Kloden said: “As a former pro cyclist, I have travelled and trained around the world. I am always on the lookout for new destinations and unique cycling experiences. The cycling community in Muscat are extremely welcoming and with Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa as my base, I could not have asked for anything more. The Omani hospitality is extremely generous on all accounts, and I look forward to my return when I can tackle more of the Sultanate’s cycling routes!”

Over the course of the weekend, riders were treated like pros with pre-ride morning briefings, route guides and support vehicles for safety. Post-ride, guests took advantage of the resort’s spa and leisure facilities, with a 60-minute recovery massages at CHI, The Spa and a hosted dinner with Kloden to learn more about his impressive cycling career. Kloden’s major achievements include placing second at the 2004 and 2006 Tour de France.

Coming soon, Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa will host a swim-bike-run training camp. The Ultimate Triathlon Training Camp with Ironman World Championship winner Faris Al Sultan, takes place from January, 11-14, 2018.

Participants will run and ride the most scenic routes in the Middle East, swim in the azure waters of the sheltered Bay of Jissah, and gain first-hand insight on breathing techniques, the importance of nutrition, and injury avoidance from Faris, who is renowned for his strengths in all three triathlon disciplines.
