QURAYAT: The first stage of the aquaculture project using floating cages was launched on Monday in the Wilayat of Qurayat under the auspices of Dr Fuad bin Jaafar al Sajwani, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. The project is supervised by Blue Water LLC, a subsidiary of Oman Aquaculture Development Company. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Al Sajwani said that the project is one of the first and leading projects by Oman Aquaculture Development Company, and will be capable of producing 3,000 tonnes of koffer fish. The two complimentary stages in the Bama and Dhabab villages in the Wilayat of Qurayat are expected to increase the production to 9,000 tonnes.

He said that the fishing marina in the wilayat will include a fish processing and packing factory, in addition to other projects for production of fish feed. This project is expected to generate jobs for the locals and will contribute in producing high quality fish using modern technologies.

The first stage of the project, which costs RO 3 million, includes 32 fish aquaculture cages of which 16 are 20 metre in diameter. Fishes will stay between 12 to 14 months in the cages to reach 400 to 450 grams each. The production targets local and foreign markets.

The second stage in Bima village in the wilayat includes 32 cages of different sizes that will produce 3,000 tonnes per annum. The third stage in Dhabab village in the wilayat includes 32 cages that will produce 3,000 tonnes per annum. — ONA
