First football on ice tourney kicks off

MUSCAT: The first of its kind football competition on ice was opened here on Sunday. Sayyid Mohammed bin Thuwaini bin Shihab al Said was the chief guest for the opening ceremony. Ahmed bin Rashid al HinWWai, General Supervisor of the Competition, said that the competition aims at attracting youths, creating a competitive atmosphere and providing a platform for sharing experience between this and the previous generations of talented footballers. Fifteen teams take part in the first category, the seniors, and 5 teams take part in the junior category of the competition which continues for five days. The promoter of Fun Zone Oman in Al Qurum with the only ice rink in the country, is hosting the championship. An artificial futsal pitch has been brought in from overseas to be laid on the ice rink for the tournament. The format will be similar to that of futsal with the players having ice around the pitch. — ONA
