Filled your car’s tank with the wrong fuel? This is what to do

Did you accidentally refuel with petrol instead of diesel - or vice versa? It happens more often than one might think, and many drivers simply don’t know what to do.

The German vehicle inspection agency Dekra advises drivers in this situation to never start the engine, or if they already have, to switch it off immediately.

Having the wrong fuel in the tank can not only cause components such as fuel pumps, fuel injectors and fuel filters to break down, but the whole engine itself can be in danger of becoming a total loss.

The next step is a job for a workshop.

Did the engine stay off for the whole time after refuelling? Or did the driver start it at any point? And did the car stop while being driven?

The measures to repair each of these cases depend on the manufacturers’ specifications, ranging from pumping the fuel out of the tank and flushing out the fuel system, to actually replacing vehicle components.

According to Dekra, in the worst of cases, this could lead to costs that approach a total write-off. — dpa
