The fees for civil and personal status lawsuits have been hiked, according to a ministerial decision No 89/2917 issued by Shaikh Abdulmalik bin Abdullah al Khalili, Minister of Justice. The fee for a civil lawsuit filed in the primary court will be 2 per cent of the total amount claimed in the case. The fee should not be less than RO 10 and not more than RO 30. However, fees for cases registered in appeals courts shall not exceed RO 50 and not be less than RO 20. However, the fee percentage will remain the same (2 per cent of the claimed amount).

The decision states that the fees for all personal status law cases should be RO 5 for the heir claims. Fees for claims should be 2 per cent of the claimed amount. However, it should not exceed RO 50 and not be less than RO 10.

The decision is based on a law promulgated by Royal Decree 29/2002 and ministerial decision 583/2010 and approval from the Ministry of Finance.

Last year, the Ministry of Justice issued a decision on the new fee structure for services offered stating that citizens must pay a fee to obtain marriage and divorce certificates, commercial licences and contracts, and debt contracts.
