Oman tennis star Fatma al Nabhani and Asian Games bronze medal winner Barakat al Harthy were among a group of sportspersons honoured at the Ministry of Sports Affairs on Monday. Fatma shared her thoughts with Oman Daily Observer on the year gone by and her expectations for the new year. “Well 2017 had its ups and downs. I am honoured to be a part of this event and share the stage with these very talented athletes. These athletes have made the country proud and it’s great to be here.

I had some injury issues this year and that stopped me from improving my ranking this year. The last tournament I played in Pune..I managed to surprise myself after qualifying as the lucky loser. I reached the semis after beating the top seed there. It was good to end the year on a high,’’ she added. Talking about the year ahead, Fatma said France will be her first destination. “The first tournament of the year will be in France, I am leaving on January 6th. Hope it will be a good year,’’ the tennis star said. Fatma is also looking to play at the Asian Games next year in Jakarta, Indonesia.

BARAKAT HAPPY

Sprinter and Doha Asian Games bronze medal winner Barakat al Harthy was elated after being felicitated at the function. “I am so excited and happy for the felicitation,’’ he said. Barakat said his main focus this year would be the Asian Games where he wants to do better than his past performance. “Hopefully, I can win the gold and do better,’’ Barakat added. The sprinter said he will be travelling to Turkey sometime next month for a training camp in preparation for the Asian Indoor meet, which will be a qualifying event for the World Championships. “The training is going well, let’s see what happens,’’ Barakat signed off with a hearty smile.
