MUSCAT: The Ministry of Heritage and Culture announced the completion of its survey and excavation work at the World Heritage Site in Bat, in cooperation with American archaeological mission.
The first season of the survey focused on the area between Al Rajoum and Al Mutairiya Towers to understand the relationship between the archaeological elements and the Bronze Age settlements in the targeted area.
The ministry said that this season revealed many remains of ancient settlements dating back to the Bronze Age, in which settlement in some of them continued to later periods of time, and found many of the tombs and archaeological remains.
Bat archaeological and historical site is located in the eastern part of the Wilayat of Ibri and is about 30 kilometres away from its centre. It is famous for its historical archaeological cemeteries. It was named Bat because it was the crossing point between the mountainous and coastal areas.
The city’s archaeological sites were discovered in 1976 when the Danish mission, in collaboration with the ministry, started excavating in the site to discover semi-pyramid tombs, which are built of stones in a sophisticated engineering. There are large number of tombs surrounding the town from all sides, but the largest gathering is located about half a kilometre north of the town of Bat.
At the excavation site, some pottery vessels, bracelets and household items were found. \

It was noted that the archaeological tombs were similar to those in Umm Al Nar Cemetery, which indicates that there were trade relations between Oman and other areas in the pre-Islamic era. The city also has a number of other larger buildings, which look like palaces compared to other monuments. These palaces were built of bigger stones, one metre and a half.

Among these palaces, the palace of Al Rajoum, the largest of the palaces and consists of eight rooms, surrounding a well.

The palace is surrounded by a number of rooms. Other palaces are Qasr Al Salmi, Qasr Al Khafaj and Qasr Al Mutairiya. — ONA
