The Environment Society of Oman (ESO) announced this year’s Earth Hour event at a press conference held recently at the Cultural Club in Qurum. The annual worldwide grassroots event involves millions of people switching off their lights from 8.30-9.30pm to highlight the need to tackle climate change and global warming on an international scale. This year’s event will be held at Al Bandar Hotel in partnership with the Shangri-la Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa from 6-10pm.

Participants will have a wide variety of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy during the event, including live music, a treasure hunt, star gazing and special rates at the Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa’s Al Tanoor restaurant. Special Earth Hour t-shirts will also be sold and the Revenue generated from the sales of the shirts will go towards supporting awareness campaigns launched by ESO.

In addition to the event, ESO will be launching a media campaign over the month of March to raise awareness of the issue of climate change and promote everyday actions to benefit the environment.

Lamees Daar, executive director of ESO, said, “For the past six years, we have joined millions around the world to shine a light on the most important issues threatening our planet. Once again, we are uniting with people from every walk of life and the international community to observe Earth Hour. We all share one planet and only by working together can we preserve it for future generations.”

She added, “Our partnership with Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa is a great opportunity to create a more interactive Earth Hour event. Together, we are building an even bigger and more engaging program this year for what we anticipate to be the largest number of participants yet.”

Rasha al Madani, director of CSR & Sustainability at the Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort& Spa, said, “We are proud to partner with ESO to commemorate Earth Hour 2017. Our partnership reflects our long-held belief in being responsible stewards of the environment. As members of the tourism sector, we have an essential role to play in maintaining the natural environment of the Sultanate and will continue to honour that responsibility in the years to come.”
