Muscat, August 23 - With schools in the Sultanate opening for the new academic year, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) has urged everyone to work together and ensure the safety road users, prevent accidents and reduce congestion on roads.

The ROP said it has completed all preparations to ensure the safety of students and deal with traffic congestion.

Police patrol will be increased on roads.

The ROP has also ensured quick intervention to address problems that often occur due to the gathering of students waiting for buses at some places.

The ROP has asked traffic departments in governorates to coordinate with directorates of education to help guide the students through awareness programmes.

It will also hold awareness programmes for bus drivers to explain the security aspects that should be followed while transporting students.

Drivers should focus on stopping buses at safe places during pick-up or drop-off of students.

“There have been cases of buses transporting more students than the permissible limit in the last few years,” said the ROP. Some young drivers, it felt, were not adhering to traffic rules.

“Parents have a key role in evaluating students’ behaviour,” it said and asked the schoolchildren to heed the advice of supervisors and bus drivers, and adhere to rules of good conduct when boarding or disembarking from buses.
