MUSCAT: The third English and Translation Forum of the English and Translation Society at Sultan Qaboos University commenced today at the university under the patronage of Dr Abdullah Mohammed Al Futaisi, University Advisor. Simultaneously, the 13th Annual Translation Symposium is being held under the theme “Exploring stakeholders’ perspectives on BA English translation programs in Oman”. The English and Translation Forum features an exhibition under the theme “language and brain”. The exhibition contains ten different corners displaying various topics related to the human brain and language. The third translation championship and the first school championship will coincide with the event.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr Mohamed Habib Kahlaoui, Chair of the organising committee of the third English and Translation Forum, said that the event is the outcome of a time-consuming process and hard work of the students. “The translation symposium this year transcends its status as an extracurricular student activity to provide a context for the English department’s ongoing internal and external review of the BA Translation program. If translation theory and practice are well researched, it is not the case of translation classroom research, specifically in our regional context. We are expected to assess our options, rethink and restructure our offerings to avoid a situation where the translation classroom is overtaken by new didactic needs”, he said.

Dr Fouad Elkarnichi, Translation and Interpreting Instructor at King Abdul Aziz University, Saudi Arabia, gave the keynote address on “Translator training in the Gulf region: reflections and results from an exploratory research study on BA and MA translation programs in the state of Qatar”. Ahmed Al Muaini, English language instructor at Sohar College of Applied Sciences, spoke about “a social eye on translator training in Oman”.

Dr AbdulGabbar Al Sharafi, Head of the Department of English at SQU, gave a talk on “Training translators from a language focused model to a professional competence model”. Ayman Al Owaisi, International Relations Officer and Translator and Interpreter at Majlis A’shura, Oman delivered a talk on “the status of transition and interpretation profession in Oman”. Hala El Othman, Tarjama, Senior Business Development Executive, UAE, made a presentation on “Translation Souq”.

The English and Translation Society at SQU, founded in 1996, is one of the leading student groups on campus.
